The Wilcox Police Department in Arizona recently received $1.37 million from the Department of Emergency Management and Military Affairs to upgrade its technology in the fight against smuggling from the southern border. The department’s Police Chief, Dale Hadfield, said that the funds were used to purchase license plate cameras, radios, computers and vehicles to enhance their capabilities.

Hadfield explained that the new license plate cameras have been strategically placed throughout the city near entry and exit points. While they are not constantly monitored, police are notified when a recorded license plate matches one in an open police report. This makes them a post-incident investigation tool rather than a crime prevention tool. Hadfield emphasized that the cameras significantly increase the chances of identifying suspects and provide valuable clues for detectives.

The technology upgrade also included the purchase of new radios that allow communication with law enforcement agencies across the state as well as the acquisition of new vehicles including two canine units and a faster pursuit car. With only 11 officers, Wilcock Police Department now has more resources to monitor and respond to criminal activity passing through the city. The investment in technology aims to improve overall public safety by increasing the department’s ability to effectively deal with crime.
