The Tennessee Business Filing Center has been sending out deceptive mail scams to businesses in the state, warning them of additional fees and dissolution if they do not file a report within 60 days of the April 1 deadline. Secretary of State Tre Hargett has issued a new warning to business owners, urging them to be cautious about any mail they receive from third parties offering services provided by the office.
Businesses must complete their annual returns to the state by April 1 each year. These reports update or verify the entity’s records with the State Department and are required to maintain “active status” in order for the business to legally operate in the state. To file their annual report, businesses can visit the TN Secretary of State website.
The Department of Business and Charities has received multiple complaints about this misleading letter. Secretary Hargett reminds all Tennessee business owners that any suspicious activity should be reported to him or his office. Business owners can report suspicious activity by emailing TNSOS.CERT@tn.gov or calling (615) 741-2286. Complaints can also be filed with the Attorney General’s office by calling (615) 741-3491 or visiting their website.
